While a dance studio might not fit into the classic description of a fitness business, if you’ve ever attended a dance class you know it’s no joke. That’s why we built our platform to help accommodate the needs of dance studios of all kinds. So, now that you’d like to open your very own dance studio there are a few things you need to be aware of and prepare for. We’ve put together this list to help you get started.

Choose Your Discipline

This might seem a little obvious, but it’s very important to really nail down what type of dance studio you’re looking to open and what discipline (or disciplines) you’ll be offering. This could be something you’re interested in, something you have experience with or something that you see is missing in your location. You definitely don’t want to open the 10th jazz studio on your block – you want to find that niche that will be successful, while also being something you enjoy.

Choose a Name

While choosing a name for your studio is something that will undoubtedly be on your task list, you need to consider the implications of the actual name you choose. Will it be memorable? Will it describe your dance discipline?

Location

Finding the right location is super important when setting up your new dance studio. You want to find a location that is central to your target audience, as well as a place that will be easily accessible by car and public transportation. In fact, if people could easily walk to your studio that would be even better.

You should also consider the actual studio itself. Is the size right for what you’re looking to offer? Will the space lend itself to multiple classes simultaneously? Can it accommodate different dance disciplines? Will you be able to offer larger classes or have to keep things more intimate? These factors are very important to consider before deciding on the location.

Set up the Studio Itself

This will vary greatly depending on the type of dance you will be teaching, but finding the right equipment is very important to providing a positive experience to your members. Your studio might just need mirrors and good flooring. Or, you might want to add in a legitimate sound system to pump up the music for each class. Do some research around similar studios to see what kind of equipment they use before diving in.

Hire Staff

Hiring the right staff is important in several ways. First, you want to have experienced dance instructors who you can trust to run classes. Second, you want staff members who can help you out with the daily tasks of running a business. Find reliable people from within the dance community who are as passionate about your dance discipline as you are.

Marketing and Branding

You need to get your name out there. A studio is nothing without its members so start getting involved in the local dance community and promote your studio. And once you’ve brought in your initial group of members, keep on top of marketing and branding. Never stop. You want to have people joining your studio every month, and continuing to promote your business will help make that happen.

Getting Started

One of the best steps you can take to help your new dance studio grow is to start using a studio management platform. Right from the moment you open your doors, the platform will help you optimize your daily tasks and help grow your business. Learn more about getting started right here
